MotoContrario organizes, within the Festival Contrasti 2024, an international composition masterclass held by Malin Bång , acclaimed as one of the most significant authors in the contemporary musical creation panorama.
The masterclass is open to composers of all ages and nationalities and is scheduled along four days and includes:
- two individual composition classes for each effective participant,
- a public lecture held by Malin Bång,
- five concerts held by Opificio Sonoro, Curious Chamber Players, Schallfeld ensemble and Ensemble MotoContrario,
- reading session, by MotoContrario Ensemble, of the scores of the selected composers,
- final concert with students works by Ensemble MotoContrario
REGISTRATION RULES
EFFECTIVE STUDENTS (10 places): € 380*
The attendance fee includes 2 individual composition lessons with Malin Bång each lasting 60 minutes and all the activities included on the masterclass schedule. Instructions for registration as an effective student can be found at the bottom of the page.
*For attendance, each effective student is asked to join MotoContrario as associate member (subscription period: 1 year). We remind that MotoContrario is a regularly registered, apolitical, non-denominational and non-profit cultural association, whose sole purpose is the study and divulgation of contemporary music. The membership quote is included in the attendance fee for the masterclass.
AUDITORS: 70 €
Auditors are guaranteed access to all the events of the masterclass (including individual lessons for effective students) they wish to attend.
Classes and all the events will take place in the main building of the Liceo “A. Rosmini” di Trento, via Bartolomeo Malfatti, 6 38122 – Trento – Italia.
To register for the selection as an effective student, the following documentation must be sent WITHIN 23:59 (UTC+2) OF 14 APRIL 2024 to the following email address:
- link to at least two (2) scores for different instrumentation (solo, chamber ensemble, big ensemble…) in pdf format uploaded online;
- link to the recordings of the scores (NOT mandatory);
- artistic and academic curriculum vitae
NB: The files will not be downloaded immediately, so it is essential that the links and the possibility of downloads remain active!

The selection, personally supervised by the guest teacher, will take place by 30 APRIL 2024.
All participants will be notified of the results by e-mail and at the same time will receive information for the payment of the registration fees which, under penalty of loss of place, will be completed by 8 days from confirmation.
Each candidate can choose to register as an effective student and, in case of non-selection, can consequently communicate the decision to participate as an auditor.

MALIN BÅNG
Malin Bång’s music is an exploration of movement and energy. She defines her musical material according to their amount of friction to create a spectrum of unpredictable and contrasting actions, ranging from the intimate and barely audible to the harsh and obstinate. In her work she often incorporates acoustic objects to explore a rich sound world and to suggest that a musical content can be shaped by anything valuable to the artistic purpose.
Malin Bång is residing in Gothenburg, Sweden and is the composer in residence and a founding member of the Curious Chamber Players. Her work includes music for instrumental ensembles, orchestra, electronic music based on field recordings, and instrumental performance pieces. Lately she has specifically explored the mixed, amplified instrumental ensemble extended with acoustic objects in collaboration with the members of Curious Chamber Players.
Her works are performed worldwide and some recent projects include the staged works I, volcanic performed at Folkoperan in Stockholm and at Theatro Municipal in Sao Paulo and The Damned and the Saved performed at Münchener Biennale and at Nationaltheater Mannheim, the large orchestral work splinters of ebullient rebellion for Donaueschinger Musiktage 2018, the portrait concert how long is now at Ultraschall Festival 2014 performed by the CCP, Klangforum Wien at Eclat Festival, Ensemble Recherche at the Wittener Tage für Neue Musik, Ensemble Nikel at the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Nadar Ensemble for the Darmstadt Ferienkurse and Faint Noise at the Huddersfield Festival. During 2015 she composed ripost for the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR at the celebratory concert of Lachenmann’s 80th birthday. During 2010 she was awarded the Kranichsteiner Stipendienpreis, in 2014 she received the Malmlöf-Forssling Composition Prize and in 2018 she was awardd the Donaueschinger Tage Orchesterpreis. 2012 she pursued the DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm’s one year residency.
Malin Bång is a regular visiting professor at academies in Sweden and abroad and from the autumn 2018 senior lecturer at the composition department at Göteborg Academy of Music and Drama. Since 2021 she is one of the lecturers at Darmstädter Ferienkurse. Malin Bång is a member of Akademie der Künste and The Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
